HOW ELECTRICITY REACHES YOUR HOME

TEACHER'S NOTES

  • KS2 Programmes of study
  • This section will help your pupils understand how electricity is transferred from power station to the home.

MAIN TEACHING POINTS

  • Electricity is sent around the country via overhead electricity lines. It travels at very high voltage - more than 1,000 times greater than the voltage used in the home

  • The high voltages are reduced before reaching the home via electricity sub-stations.

  • In built-up areas or near airports, electricity is carried underground - but at a higher cost.
